Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 1970

The number that stops you is on the back of the story, not the label: this wine was harvested in 1970 and bottled in July 1982. Twelve years in cask before it ever saw glass, and only then did it begin the slow walk to market. That is not neglect; that is the entire philosophy of traditional Rioja, and nobody embodies it like Marqués de Murrieta.

The house dates to 1852 and stands at the very beginning of modern Rioja — Bordeaux methods imported into Spain, then bent to a Spanish sense of time. Castillo Ygay itself began in 1877, first under the Bordeaux-flavoured name “Château Ygay,” rechristened Castillo Ygay in 1917. The Gran Reserva Especial at the top of the pyramid is declared only in years the house judges exceptional; in all others, it simply doesn’t exist.

The Old School’s Wager

The traditional Rioja style sits at the opposite pole from modern extraction and new oak. Its wager is this: surrender colour early — these wines fade to brick and garnet decades before their peers — and in exchange, the aromatics keep unfolding for half a century. A 1970 opened in 2024, at fifty-four years old, is exactly the kind of bottle that settles whether the wager pays.

In the Glass

It pays. The nose moved through plum and dried black cherry into cedar, smoke, mushroom and earth, with that unmistakable old-cask register of coconut and nut husk, leather and dried flowers drifting above. The palate still spoke in complete sentences: cherry and licorice up front, then dark chocolate, caramel and roasted nuts behind.

Two things stood out. The tannins had melted entirely to silk, leaving only the outline of structure — expected at this age. The acidity had not melted at all — bright, almost sharp, holding the whole wine upright like a spine that never got the news about the passing decades. The colour in the glass was even darker than the age would suggest, and the bottle served clean.

A wine built with waiting already priced in has no reason to be anxious about time. Fifty-four years on, this one wasn’t.
