Krug Vintage 1989

Krug’s Vintage has always been a different proposition from the house’s Grande Cuvée. Where the multi-vintage blend pursues a continuous house identity, the Vintage is deliberately singular — a portrait of one year’s character, assembled from the most expressive wines of that harvest and then held in Krug’s cellars for well over a decade before it is allowed out. You are not buying consistency; you are buying a year, framed.

1989 was a year worth framing. The sun was generous in Champagne, and in Krug’s hands the season matured into a style of opulence and concentration — riper and rounder than its more celebrated neighbour 1988, and unmistakably itself.

The Cork Tells a Story

At a chef’s counter in the autumn of 2024, the bottle was thirty-five years old. The first good omen came before the first pour: capsule, wire and cork head all emerged clean and intact, the cork releasing with the composure of a bottle that has slept well its whole life. With old Champagne, provenance is half the tasting, and this one passed the inspection.

The cork and bottle

In the Glass

Deep, burnished gold, the mousse fine and quiet — thirty-five years, worn openly. The nose was Krug in full maturity: baked apple and white orchard fruit layered with brioche and toast, honey, spice, and a hazelnut-almond richness from the long oxidative rearing that defines the house. Above it all floated a suggestion of truffle and a faint high note of flowers.

The palate was rich and toasty — ripe lemon and cream in texture — but the frame never sagged. That is the perennial miracle of Krug’s Vintage wines: an acidity that stays vivid enough, even at this age, to carry all that opulence without a moment of heaviness. The finish trailed off long and nutty.

At the counter

Fully mature, squarely in its window, and not remotely tired. Some wines at thirty-five are a memory being politely kept alive. This one was simply a great Champagne that happened to have been born in 1989.
