Say “Selosse” and the word “solera” arrives almost automatically. For this bottle, it’s wrong — and the distinction is the key to understanding it. The perpetual-reserve solera belongs to Substance, Anselme Selosse’s single-vineyard Avize cuvée. V.O. — Version Originale — is something else: a blend of three consecutive vintages from three grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs — Avize, Cramant and Oger — drawn from high-slope parcels where the chalk runs closest to the surface, aged around forty-two months on the lees, and released with essentially no dosage.
The Burgundian shape of the thinking is no accident. Selosse trained in Burgundy, and came home to Avize with a conviction that has since reshaped grower Champagne entirely: the base wine and its terroir come first; the bubbles are punctuation. Half-sized yields, biodynamic farming, parcel-by-parcel vinification in oak rather than steel — by 1994 Gault-Millau had named him France’s winemaker of the year, and a generation of growers has been working in his shadow since.
In the Glass
The colour announces the intent before the nose does: deep gold, closer to a mature white Burgundy than to anything most people call Champagne. Dried fruit and citrus oil come first, then the oxidative procession — roasted nuts, honey, buttery pastry, baking spice, beeswax.
The mousse doesn’t sparkle for attention. This is a wine of texture before froth: full, vinous, the mid-palate stacked in layers with a vivid line of acidity underneath holding it all in tension. And then the finish — the saline, chalk-driven salt streak that runs long through the end of every serious Selosse. That salinity is the house’s fingerprint.
One practical note for anyone lucky enough to meet a bottle: Selosse pioneered printing disgorgement dates on the back label — a transparency that became an industry standard — though since 2022 the information has moved into an NFC chip read by app. Lots vary meaningfully in this cuvée, so the back label is worth the scan. The harder part, as ever with Selosse, is encountering the bottle at all.
